A UK victim of an acid attack has shared an inspiring photo as part of the ’10 year challenge’ trend, providing an important reality check for the social media world.
Katie Piper, 35, joined in the popular ‘10 year challenge’ social media trend where users post side by side images of themselves, one from 2009 and one from today.
Intended as a fun way to look back at your former self, what sets Piper apart from the crowd is her harrowing 2009 photo, taken during her long recovery from a brutal acid attack.
“First pic is me age 25 year of 2009 in my mums kitchen. Second pic is me age 35 last week in my own kitchen 2019!”
In 2008 Piper was walking along a London street when a man she’d never met before approached her and threw sulphuric acid in her face in an attack planned by Piper’s boyfriend.
The horrifying attack caused burns to her entire face and left her blind in one eye. Piper had to be put into an induced coma for 12 days as doctors worked to save what they could of her skin.
