A transgender weightlifter who won multiple times during the 100% Raw Powerlifting Federation competition in Virginia last month has been stripped of her titles following a huge backlash.
The American powerlifter and strength coach Mary Gregory went “9 for 9” at the competition that took place in April and broke four world records for women. She broke the record for the open bench, Masters squat, Masters deadlift, and Masters world total record.
The president of the Raw Powerlifting Federation, Paul Bossi, however, said that she has been stripped of her titles after the organization learned of the progression of Gregory’s transition.
Bossi told Mail Online that it was revealed that the female lifter “was actually a male in the process of becoming a female”, and their rules are based on physiological classification, rather than identification. So, on the basis of all information presented to the Board of Directors for this particular case, they made a conclusion that the correct physiological classification for Gregory is male.
Gregory has since told Outsports that the decision was made after representatives from the federation insisted that one of the officials is present while she provided a urine sample.
She told them that it’s kind of embarrassing for her, because she doesn’t have the correct anatomy. However, she did her business while someone watched her sitting on the toilet, and so that’s where that statement comes from.
Apparently, Raw Powerlifting Federation is following the footsteps of USA Powerlifting, which recently passed a policy that effectively bans all transitioning athletes from competing against athletes whose gender matches their biological one.
The organization said that men naturally have a higher bone density, larger bone structure, and stronger connective tissue, as well as higher muscle density than women, so these traits won’t go away even with reduced levels of testosterone, and these women have biological benefits over women born as a female.
